Collection includes ten letters, mostly addressed to critics and writers, and clippings from newspaper and journal articles. Of particular interest is one letter addressed to the critic Gustave Kahn concerning a scheme to interest art patrons in decorative painting (n.d.), and a letter to Thadee Natanson commenting on a recent article in "Cri de Paris" (n.d.). Other correspondents include Francis Jourdain, Gabriel Mourey, Pierre-Georges Jeanniot, and Alfred Roll (n.d.).

Painter of portraits and genre scenes, also an esteemed designer and book illustrator born in Geneva. He was a disciple of his father, Pierre-Alexandre, the director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Dijon. An army officer, he resigned in 1881 and started exhibiting his works regularly at the Salon in Paris. He wrote this text at the age of 77.
